Raw Feeding for dogs (and cats) according to wikipedia is the practice of feeding domestic dogs and cats a diet primarily of uncooked meat and bones. A growing number of people have moved to feeding a more species appropriate diet to their pets. Some of this is due to the contaminated pet food issues at the beginning of 2007, some have found this to be a healthier way to feed their pets.
There are a couple different types of models such as BARF (bones and raw food or biologically appropriate raw food) created by Dr Ian Billinghurst, and there is the Prey Model, which simulates feeding your pet in the same proportions that their prey would come in, including internal organs and fur along with the meat and bones.
I have been feeding my dogs a BARF diet for the past 7 years. I found that my dog bohdan reacted poorly to commercial pet food, even the high end "natural brands". So I started reading Dr. Billinghursts books and changing Bohdan's diet to be more inline with a BARF diet.
Bohdan's diet has gone through many permutations as he has changed from the 1 year old dog when we first started to the 8 1/2 year old he is now. The only major health issues he has had are two torn ACL ligaments and surgeries to correct them. Well up until this last year, when I found a Mast cell tumor on his leg.
Over the 7 years I have been feeding him a raw diet, I also fed my housemates dogs, first Crosby who passed away from cancer nearly 6 years ago, and trillian who we got as a puppy and has been raw fed from the age of 10 weeks.
Our diets have ranged in effort level of purchasing the beef trim and raw veggies and grinding it ourselves to purchasing premade/mixed meat and veggies.
I have created this forum as a place to talk about raw feeding experiences. What you like to feed, what is working for you and what isn't. I would like it to be an open community where people can come and share their experiences on the topic of raw feeding.
