I use the following recipe as Halloween treats for the dogs who come shell-outing with the kids. They look festive because of the brightly colored vegetables and don't tell anyone but my brother-in-law actually likes these!

1/4 cup butter, softened
3 cups rye flour
1/4 cup powdered milk
1 garlic clove, pressed
1/3 cup chicken broth
1/2 can carrots and peas, drained
1 egg, beaten

Combine butter and flour in a large bowl until it looks like a crumble topping.
Add powdered milk to the chicken broth and now the egg. Mix well.
Add this liquid to the flour mixture.
Add the garlic and the peas and carrots. Mix very well and knead until dough is workable but stiff. Add broth or flour to adjust firmness if need be.
Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into shapes.
Place cookies on a non stick baking sheet and bake for approx 1 hour or until golden at 350 degress F.
These cookies will harden as they cool and can be stored in a conatiner without a lid right on your counter top.

This is probably the easiest recipe you'll ever come across but don't tell your dog or cat! They'll have to earn this treat just as they do others... By looking cute of course!

1 x 6-once jar chicken baby food
1/2 cup wheat germ
dash of garlic powder
1 cup of nonfat dry milk

Mix all ingredients in a bowl . Drop by teaspoon onto a greased or non stick cookie tray. Flatten with the back of the spoon. Bake for 10-12 minutes until brown at the edges. Let cool before handing one out. This will keep in the fridge for about 5 days but they'll never last that long so don't worry about that part!
1 pound of steak or some other lean meat that your dog loves best Garlic powder

Cut meat into thin strips. Place on a cookie sheet. Dust gently with garlic powder.
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Bake for 20 minutes. Turn meat over to other side and bake for another 20 minutes or until fairly dry looking. Cave in to the desperate plea for a treat and give one to the dog before storing these in freezer bags and using them ( thawed or frozen ) on your next outing.

The following recipie given to me by my buddy Joanne AKA "catlady" who does rescue work. With a minimum of 10 felines in her house at all times, she swears by these treats as a way of getting the fussiest kitty to take a nibble.

Cat Treat

2 small cans, Salmon
2 cups oatmeal
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup cornmeal
1 Egg
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup chicken broth

Mix all of the above ingredients together in a bowl. Knead and add more flour or broth to form a dough isn't very sticky. Roll out to a thickness of 1/4" . Place on a non stick baking Use a knife and score the dough horizontally, then vertically to make a grid of squares about 1/4". Don't score score the dough right through. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour or until fully baked and crisp Let cool, break into bits and store in an airtight container

This recipe is courtesy of my friend Janet who complains about her overweight dog but feeds him 4 of these 'brownies' a day. Feeding this many isn't a great idea but the recipe is!
