Lastnight Bohdan didn't get a second walk. He was still limping pretty badly.
I just thought it would be too much. I did give him a massage, and some aspirin. Then at 2am before going to sleep, I gave him some homeopathic remedies to help his muslce soreness, I think that is really the only problem right now.
We shall see if we can fit two walks in today or not.
Bohdan is limping, hmmm, more just favoring his TPLO leg. He isn't so bad as toe touching, but he does favor it and when he gets up from resting I can see that it bothers him. We are not going to take a walk this morining, much to his disappointment.
I called the vet and left her a message, I just want to make sure that I am not pushing him too hard.
We walked to the end of the block and back again. However this time, Bohdan really wanted to keep on going. He didn't want to turn around and head home. We had a bit of a discussion on the issue, and we walked back on the opposite side of the street. He had a lot of energy, but was still limping, and went to sleep shortly after we returned. I am not sure if I should try to add another walk into the schedule yet.
Well Bohdan and Shari talked me into go on a walk. I thought we would just go to the end of the block and back again, but when we reached the end of the block, Bohdan assured me that he would be able to make it all the way around.
So we started to go around the block. He had to pee on everyones lawn.... a little here a little there...
As exactly the half way point Bohdan started favoring his leg a little more. But what could we do, we were comitted to walk the rest of the way.
Again this morning I took Bohdan to the park for a walk. Hoping we would be able to last the full ten minutes. At nine minutes Bohdan had decided that he had, had enough and walked to the car... got home and slept all afternoon.
We took our first walk today. It only lasted 7 minutes. We walked in the park near our house and then we came home and slept the entire afternoon.
No walk at night, leg seemed too sore.
We went to the vet today for Bohdan's 8 week follow up.
It was good news.... The bone is healed and we are able to begin
Physical Therapy.
The plan for carefully building his muslces and allowing his body to adjust to the surgery are as follows:
Week 1- two 10 minute walks/day, no less than three times in the week.
Week 2- two 15 minute walks/day, no less than three times in the week.
Week 3- two 20 minute walks/day no less than three times in the week.
Week 4- Two 30 minute walks/day no less than three times in the week.
I took Bohdan in for his 4 week check up.
The x-rays showed that the bone healing was right on track.
Still need to keep him quiet, but we might only have to keep this up for another 4 weeks.
The vet was pleased with the way the one is healing, and how well he is walking on his leg. He weighed in at 147 pounds, down three from the beginning of the surgery.
On February 19th Bohdan had TPLO surgery performed on his left knee. Links to information on this surgery can be found on my ACL information page.
I was able to bring Bohdan home the same day as his surgery. Which is unusal, and somewhat
freightening. No one wants to see their dog just a few hours after surgery. He was barely
able to lift his head. His tongue was sticking out of his mouth and he didn't even realize it.
Though I must say he was happy I was there.
I had rented a mini van to transport him after surgery, and once I removed the catheter
